The Maintenance Trainee works in partnership with the Maintenance Mechanics and Maintenance leadership and Production leadership to learn and develop skills to perform basic maintenance and repairs on food manufacturing machinery equipment, including conveyors, packaging equipment, production equipment, electrical controls systems and other related plant systems, while adhering to safety rules and focusing on food safety.

Responsibilities and Expectations: To perform jobs successfully, the incumbent will be required to perform the essential functions with or without accommodation.  The company reserves the right to modify, delete or add to the essential functions for the Maintenance position at any time.

  • Trains and develops skills to provides routine inspections and monitoring of all production equipment
  • Trains and develops skills to maintains operating condition of machinery by trouble shooting, disassembling, repairing and reassembling.
  • Trains with Maintenance Mechanics to perform preventative maintenance of the machinery
  • Trains and develops skills to test, troubleshoot and replace electrical components of machine such as fuses, relays, switches, sensors, etc.
  • Trains and develops skills to performs mechanical set ups and applies principles of mechanics and machinery fundamentals
  • Safely operates a powered industrial truck and aerial manlift equipment
  • Able to use measuring tools and read blue prints and schematics
  • Ensures all equipment documentation is up to date and accurate
  • Performs data entry into Computer Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS)
  • Trains and develops skills to prepare unscheduled work orders to support production requirements
  • Trains and develops skills to troubleshoots and repairs automation systems (PLC based)
  • Remains current in training expectations
  • Keeps work environment clean and safe
  • Trains and develops skills to performs millwright activities such as: cutting, grinding, welding, and other fabrication techniques
  • Able to follow direction for basic assembly and repair of equipment
  • Works with maintenance mechanics on projects and rebuilds 
  • Complete paperwork for check lists, work orders, and other documentation
  • At end of shift, secures all equipment, performs general housekeeping duties and completes and maintains work records on CMMS
  • Provides feedback to Maintenance Planner, Maintenance Mechanics, and/or Supervisors and Management on the effectiveness of Preventive Maintenance Work Orders to continually improve maintenance program
  • Proactively monitors line and initiates corrective actions that circumvent downtime
  • Able to identify parts for corrective maintenance activities and assist in quoting process
  • Demonstrates excellent communications skills; listens to other ideas and suggestions
  • Works with honesty and integrity; upholds organizational values
  • Demonstrates a positive attitude and strong work ethic
  • Follows all safety policies and practices; proactively identifies safety hazards
  • Follows all GMP and Food Safety Rules and Regulations
  • All other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience: Eight years of prior machine operation experience, and proof of continuing education or completion for a technical Associate’s Degree or equivalent and one year of manufacturing experience
  • Computer literate and proficiency with email, word processor and CMMS
  • Education: Minimum of high school diploma or GED
  • Working knowledge of pneumatic, vacuum and hydraulic systems and piping
  • Knowledge of PLC functionality
  • Ability to test electrical and electronic equipment and components

Physical Activity/Working Conditions:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, reach, stretch, stoop, bend, and use hands and fingers. 





Minimum Physical Requirements

The physical demands described are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

  • Will walk/stand for the duration of a 8-12hour shift and be able to use both hands, twist, bend, stoop, reach and maneuver in tight or cramped areas.
  • Will climb stairs, ladders, equipment scaffolding, tanks and heights to 50 feet.
  • Will push/pull objects weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Will lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Will use one or both hands to hold, grip, and use tools required for duties, including but not limited to a utility knife.
  • Will hear and talk on an ongoing basis in an atmosphere of moderate and loud noise.
  • Will work in and around cold water or hot water up to 185° F.
  • Will work in cold, warm, hot, humid and/or wet conditions.

Within the work environment, the employee’s physical condition must be such that the employee can wear:

  • Hearing protection.
  • Head protection.
  • Steel-toe slip resistant footwear.
  • Eye protection when required.

Hand protection when required.
