Job Description:

Establishes and maintains productive and positive relationships with key business leaders and union representatives.  Participates in the organization’s collective bargaining process and works to ensure that labor agreements are implemented and administered appropriately.  Supports the Field HR organization in administering the grievances and arbitration process, and seeks to resolve disputes between workers and management.  Participates in the development of labor strategies and execution of  labor contract negotiations.  Represents the Company during Labor Contract Negotiations.  Contributes to other functional areas (such as compensation and benefits, recruitment, training, and development) as they pertain to the organizations unionized workforce.  

Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Serves as first or second-chair spokesperson in contract negotiations and other dealings with local unions.
  • Coordinates with local management, corporate pension and benefits specialists, and senior leadership in preparing negotiation strategy and proposals to determine feasibility, cost, effects on operations and relationship to prevailing trends in the industry and the geographic area.
  • In consultation with others, drafts contract language and proposals.
  • Advises local HR managers and management personnel in administering contracts and labor relation policies / practices that are in compliance with federal / state laws, organization policies / practices, and applicable collective bargaining agreements.
  • Manages company responses to union organizing activity and coordinates union election campaigns, including training of management personnel, interfacing with unions and NLRB.
  • Actively participates in the development and implementation of a broad, well-balanced and effective labor relations strategy, including developing and implementing union-free training and proactive strategies to respond to union organizing.
  • Coordinates with in-house legal counsel, payroll, EHS, and benefits specialists on implementation of policies and procedures in union locations.
  • Must be able to independently research and respond to sophisticated and complex labor relations and employment law issues in a time sensitive and client service oriented environment.
  • Strong understanding and working knowledge of applicable labor and employment laws and regulations at the state and federal level, WARN, FLSA, FMLA and NLRA.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of the field's policies, procedures and practices; Performs complex tasks; directs the work of other employees.
  • May have some impact on departmental budgeting, strategic planning and procedural change.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Outstanding collaboration, facilitation and influence management skills; Ability to work well across multiple functions.

Education:   Bachelor’s Degree Required – Type: Human Resources or related field

 

Minimum Experience Preferred (Number of years and type):

  • Minimum of five (5) years’ experience in human resources with experience in negotiating and administering collective bargaining agreements, including negotiations, labor arbitrations and grievance proceedings, preferably in a manufacturing or distribution environment.
  • Master’s in Labor Relations preferred but not required

Travel Requirements: up to 50%
